On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
